More than 75% of Quora’s traffic comes from search engines. This fact means that Quora ranks exceptionally well on Google, Bing, etc. More importantly, your business can get a massive boost in brand exposure if your answers come before other Quora writers.
For those of you who don’t know Quora, it’s a Q&A platform founded in 2009. The concept is simple. People ask questions and answer each other’s questions about literally anything. Some of them are difficult to answer without expertise. Others are silly and make you chuckle, and some are outright ridiculous.
Even though Quora has been around for more than a decade, I’ve only been using it for five years. After a while, I was able to generate thousands of page views and hundreds of trial users that eventually converted to paying customers. If you’re ready to dip your toes into Quora, follow my lead on your path to success.
1. Write a compelling bio
After you’ve created your Quora profile, the first thing you should do is to fill out your bio. Apart from your name, make sure you also include your job title. As Quora says in one of their prompts, credentials add credibility to your content.
Make other users feel welcome on your profile. Share a little bit more about what you do for a living, and don’t forget to mention your hobbies or anything you enjoy doing in your spare time. That personal touch helps other users better connect with you and your content.
If you want to show off a little, feel free to include a link to any relevant publications or a video that complements your bio. You can also invite other users to visit your other social media profiles.
2. Use a high-quality profile pic
While it’s also a part of setting up your profile, choosing a good profile picture deserves a separate step. That’s a part of your profile that other people will remember the most, so make sure it’s memorable. It doesn’t have to be a professional photograph taken in a studio. Your smartphone will do. Take a close-up shot of your face and remember to smile. Your profile pic and your bio will serve as the equivalent of your business card. A good profile pic and bio will draw people to your answers. If you add a poor picture and a lousy bio, you’ll get lost in the sea Quora accounts.
3. Update your credentials
Questions on Quora are grouped into topic clusters. Quora allows for adding separate credentials for each topic cluster. Why is this important if I already mentioned that you add your credentials while setting up your profile? It’s all about being relevant to a topic. When you answer a question about anything unrelated to promoting your business, it’s not going to be helpful to people when your credentials say you’re a marketing manager at a company XYZ. Instead, use custom credentials to let other users know why you’re qualified to answer a particular question. You can add separate credentials for Employment, Education, Location, Space, Topic, and Language.
4. Prepare a list of keywords
You might think, “Now that my profile is ready, it’s time to start answering questions!” Well, not exactly. You need to be more strategic about your choices. In the same way as if you’d prepared a list of article ideas before you even launch your blog, you should compile a list of keywords that are relevant to your business. Doing this will make it a lot easier to find relevant questions. Remember what I said in the opening paragraph. Quora ranks exceptionally well on Google, and your business could benefit from significant exposure because of that.
5. Make sure you answer questions that matter
If you run your own blog, you know that not all of your articles rank high and generate relevant traffic. You need to be aware of the fact that it’s the same on Quora. You might be answering tons of questions, but not all of your answers will drive a significant number of users to your website.
To make the most of the time that you spend on Quora, maximize your chances of finding the questions with the highest number of views and followers. The more views and followers a question has, the better the chances are that you’ll get a nice boost in traffic. These two factors are good indicators of whether a question is a good fit for you. The best way to determine this is to take a look at the question stats. Click on the three dots next to a question, and “View Stats and Log” after that:
6. Use the Quora ads hack to find the most engaging questions
I had been using Quora for a few years before I found out about this one. One of the features in the Quora ads manager has been a game changer in finding the questions with the most potential for high engagement. Here’s how this hack works:
- Click on “New campaign”
- Enter a campaign name, objective, and daily maximum budget
- You’ll be taken to the next step, “Create an ad set”
- Click on “Contextual targeting” and tick “Questions”
- Click on the “Bulk add” button
And that’s when the magic happens. Add your keywords here and click on the “Continue” button. You’ll see a list of questions related to your keywords, but the best part is that you’ll see a weekly number of views for each of those questions.
This hack should give you an idea of which questions have the most potential for high engagement.
7. Stand out from the crowd
Even if you provide the most valuable answers, nobody’s going to read them if they’re a wall of text that’s painful to look at. Quora gives you a few options to format your answers. You should use them if you want to be before other people’s answers. There’s nothing sophisticated about the tools you can use, but they’re enough to make your answers eye-catching.
Bold, italics, numbered lists, and bullet points are among the most basic editing options. There’s also the possibility to add links, which is particularly useful considering that your main goal is to promote your business. On top of that, you can add images, embed tweets, and YouTube videos. Tag other Quorans to involve them in discussions, and use block quotes if you want to refer to external sources. Those of you who know how to code have the possibility of answering more technical questions with lines of code.
8. Don’t try to hide the fact that you’re trying to market your business
Being authentic goes a long way. It’s possible to promote your business without spamming links to your website in every answer you post. The key to success is to be authentic. Even though you mentioned your employer in your bio and credentials, it’s totally fine to repeat that information in some of your answers. You can write something along the lines of, “I’m biased because I work for XYZ, but our tool can help you solve your problems by…”
Don’t try to act like you’re not affiliated with a business you promote. People are allergic to that type of behavior, and they’ll sense it the moment they come across insincere answers. They’ll start downvoting your answers, causing them to drop lower and lower. In the worst-case scenario, Quora will hide or delete your answers entirely.
Remember to use Quora like a regular user that goes there because they enjoy spending time on the platform. Find questions related to your hobbies and have fun answering them. At the end of the day, you want your profile to look like there’s a real person behind it and not just a link-spamming bot.
